Judge Orders NC Officials to Certify State Supreme Court Election

A federal judge has ordered North Carolina officials to certify the results of the 2024 state Supreme Court election, dismissing Republican Jefferson Griffin’s attempt to challenge certain absentee ballots.
Judge Richard Myers ruled that the State Board of Elections must certify the results based on the most recent recount, which shows incumbent Democrat Allison Riggs ahead by 734 votes. In his decision, Myers said retroactively rejecting absentee ballots would violate voters’ due process rights.
The ruling also prohibits the board from curing or invalidating the disputed ballots. Riggs welcomed the decision, while Griffin still has the option to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.

On Facebook, Gov. Josh Stein said:
“A federal district court just ordered the certification of the NC Supreme Court election, reaffirming what we already knew — Allison Riggs won. You can’t change the rules of an election after it has occurred.
Jefferson Griffin needs to concede and end this travesty.“
